On the Optimality of Superstructures for Simulated Moving Beds

چکیده
The past decade has seen a variety of operating modifications for Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) processes, including Three-Zone, VARICOL, and PowerFeed. In recent studies, we have shown that these can all be embedded within a superstructure optimization problem with timevariant flow rates. Moreover, the resulting dynamic optimization problem has yielded a number of interesting and useful insights on novel SMB operations. In many cases, optimal solutions have a “bang-bang” character, i.e., at any instant of time, the feed, desorbent, extract and raffinate streams appear at only one location. Remarkably, this occurs even though the optimization is performed without the introduction of binary decision variables. In this study we analyze and present the conditions where “bangbang” solutions are optimal. We also demonstrate cases where these conditions do not hold and where “bang-bang” solutions are suboptimal. To demonstrate that these properties are independent of the column model and solution strategy, we present both “bang-bang” and “nonbang-bang” cases for two different column models.

Simulation of Separation of a Racemic Mixture of Ibuprofen by Supercritical Fluid Chromatography in Simulated Moving Bed
Separation of a racemic mixture of ibuprofen at a low concentration level by supercritical fluid chromatography in a simulated moving bed (SFC-SMB) is investigated by simulation. The feasibility of ibuprofen enantiomers separation has been experimentally examined in the literature. Our simulation results show that separation of ibuprofen enantiomers is feasible by this method, and R-ibuprofen a...
متن کاملOn a Moving Base Robotic Manipulator Dynamics
There are many occasions where the base of a robotic manipulator is attached to a moving platform, such as on a moving ship, terrain or space shuttle. In this paper a dynamic model of a robotic manipulator mounted on a moving base is derived using both Newton-Euler and Lagrange-Euler methods. The presented models are simulated for a Mitsubishi PA10-6CE robotic manipulator characteristics mounte...
متن کاملComputer Simulation of Hydrodynamic Behavior of Aggregative Fluidized Beds
Hydrodynamic behavior of aggregative fluidized beds has been studied and a model proposed for the prediction of different characteristics of fluidized beds. According to this model, a computer program is prepared and the hydrodynamic behavior of some industrial units has been simulated.
متن کاملStatic and Dynamic Analyses of Micropiles to Reinforce the High Railway Embankments on Loose Beds
Construction of railway embankments on loose beds without using any methods of soil improvement (e.g. stone columns in silt and clay beds, deep soil mixing method, jet grouting and also using micropiles individually or in groups form) leads to reduction of embankment slope gradient, which significantly increases the volume of soil operation. Generally, micropile as a reinforcing element with t...
متن کاملEffect of Bed Diameter on the Hydrodynamics of Gas-Solid Fluidized Beds
Effect of scale on the hydrodynamics of gas-solid fluidized beds was investigated in two fluidized beds of 152 mm and 78 mm in diameter. Air at room temperature was used as the fluidizing gas in the bed of sand particles. The Radioactive Particle Tracking (RPT) technique was employed to obtain the instantaneous positions of the particles at every 20 ms of the experiments. These data were u...
